The force that drove me to begin this foundation, speak publicly and get involved with community activism regarding cancer was that my mother and her only sister passed away from Breast Cancer, and my grandmother passed away from Ovarian Cancer. Even after their deaths, I thought to myself, what does cancer have to do with me? Breast examinations, are you kidding? I am In my twenties, I do not smoke nor do I drink. I had absolutely no fears about the risks of having cancer myself. I thought cancer was a midlife crises, or old age issues, and I did not have the time or the inclination to be dealing with or thinking about those types of thoughts. I was at the tender age of 23; a healthy young wife and mother of a 5yr old, enjoying all that life had to offer. That was when reality stepped in and shocked me back into the present. “Sorry to inform you Mrs. Brown, but you have OVARIAN CANCER”. Through the faith that I had in God and the help of some wonderful doctors in the military system, I beat Ovarian Cancer and even surpassed the 5yr cancer free mark. I enjoyed a beautiful life; even gaining against all odds a second son. Unfortunately, at the age of 36 I was graced by a new version of the very words that had haunted me 14yrs earlier. “Sorry to inform you Mrs. Brown but you now have BREAST CANCER”. That’s when I became a staunch believer that cancer does not discriminate! Race, age, or gender is not part of the equation when cancer knocks on your door. Caution: just because you were cured from one type of cancer does not mean that you cannot be diagnosed with another!
